Investigating the interaction between human blood and membranes in the biochemical laboratory
The Biochemistry Laboratory supports membrane development activities from the initial phases of polymer screening to the clinical evaluation and market introduction of the product.
Method Development
The characterisation of membranes in terms of their haemocompatibility (referred to in ‘Membrane Characterisation’ section) requires special assessment techniques to address specific, product-related features. In addition to the battery of tests already in routine use, new in vitro methods are continuously being established to achieve a more reliable prediction of the final clinical performance of the materials or devices. This continuous improvement is necessary in order to incorporate current advances in instrumentation technology as well as in medical sciences into our facilities.

Clinically-oriented Activities
Our contribution to clinical studies is to extrapolate our expertise from the in vitro to the clinical situation. In collaboration with our clinical partners, the products are evaluated thoroughly with patient safety and convenience being foremost considerations during the trials. The activities in this area include dealing with special haemocompatibility issues that may arise during the routine use of our membranes in the clinic.
Marketing Support
As sales and marketing operations rely increasingly upon detailed scientific discussions, an integral part of our activities is to provide appropriate scientific support during various stages of the product development. This includes publishing and presenting original research, organising and presenting seminars for special target groups as well as helping prepare literature for marketing purposes. Finally, direct contacts with customers ensure that their needs and queries are addressed without delay.
